Women's Studies Experience 

Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Women’s Studies, University of California, Berkeley, 2000-2001 (on leave from tenure-track position at Marshall University).  Taught “Identities Across Difference”, “American Women Write Nature,” and “Senior Seminar” (two semesters).   Mentored the Women’s Studies Student Association.

Women's Studies Coordinator, Marshall University, 1997-2001. Developed the new
Women's Studies Minor, recruited and trained faculty, developed new courses, established committee structures and procedures, promoted the program through an aggressive media plan, solicited both inside and outside funding, and other administrative duties. Included being Chair of the university-wide Women's Studies Committee.

Chair, Commission on Multiculturalism Subcommittee on Women, Marshall University, Fall 1996-1998. Appointed to this special presidential advisory commission. In the subcommittee on women, we worked to create a network of women's organizations across campus to better the conditions for women faculty, students, and staff.

Chair, Women's Studies Ad Hoc Committee,  College of Liberal Arts, Marshall University, Fall 1995-Spring 1997. Worked with committee to develop and implement plan to establish the first Women's Studies Minor at Marshall University.

Member, Search Committee, Women's Center, Summer 1996. Worked with committee to recruit new Women's Center Director.

Member, Women's Studies Committee, University of Georgia, Athens, GA, Fall 1994-Spring 1995. Helped to organize women's history month and other women's studies events. Gave two presentations during women's history month--one on international women's literary history and the other on women writers and the civil war.

Special Assistant to the Director, Women's Studies, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, Summer 1994. Worked under Dr. Sue Rosser.  Helped to write and edit report and publication for $250,000 National Science Foundation Grant as well as maintain office functions while staff and faculty were on vacation.

Graduate Assistant, Women's Studies, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, 1990-93. Was the only graduate assistant in women's studies for three years in a well-supported and well-funded program. Worked with the director and assistant director to develop programming, organize fundraisers, and more. Also taught two sections of the introductory women's studies course.

Editorial Assistant, Women's Studies International Forum, University of South Carolina, Fall 1990-Spring 1993. Responsibilities included making initial evaluations, revision suggestions, and final editing changes for manuscripts and book reviews as well as managing correspondence and various clerical duties.


Grant Writing and Awards 

•    Grant Writer, Disciplining the Body Conference, University of California, Berkeley, Fall 2001.  Worked with system-wide women's studies directors to gain funding for system-wide conference.  Won $10,000.
•    Advisor and Reviewer, The Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia, Marshall University, 1995-2001.  Worked with Director Lynda Ann Ewen to develop and win two $250,000 Rockefeller Grants to create and maintain research center.  Assisted with running of programs, holding of national conference, selection of fellows, and was chosen as Interim Director (though did not serve).
•    Drinko Academy Award, Fall 1999-Spring 2000, Marshall University for research on Cherokee Catharine Brown (1800-1823).

•    Tutor, Women's Correctional Facility, Broad River Road, South Carolina Department of Corrections, Columbia, SC, January 1992-June 1992. Provided tutoring to isolated death row inmate.
•    Founder and Coordinator, Reading Program, Family Shelter, Columbia, SC, August 1991-May 1992. Planned and implemented outreach reading program for the homeless children of Columbia's Family Shelter.
•    Coordinator, Amnesty International, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, 1989-1992.  Wrote public relations materials, recruited volunteers, organized fund raisers.
